LAWRENCE SHERIFF SCHOOL UNDER 15 TEAM WINS COUNTY SCHOOLS FINAL
In the Warwickshire
Schools Team event, held at the school table tennis centre, Ben Meakin,
Jack Randle, Matthew Outhwaite and Jesse Kendrick-Hill won gold beating
school teams from the second city in both the final and semi. They
progressed to the zone finals next month in Cheltenham. The school U19
team suffered the narrowest of defeats in the final to King Edward VI –
the match ended 4 games all, 12 ends/sets all and 241 points to 244. For
the U13 team it was their first experience of competitive play but they
performed well winning the play off for third and fourth place.

Wa rwickshire
Schools Individual Championships
Rugby Cadets dominated the U13
Boys event with Saturdays successful Cadet
threesome making it through to the semi-finals. Sheriff boys Matthew and
Jack met in one semi-final. They played some of the most
competitive table tennis of the night enthralling many of the watching
players and parents. the match ended in a narrow win for Jack in the
fifth. Jack then battled bravely against Xiaoyang in the final but Xiao
played his customary high level to win in straight sets and go through
to the National finals in Stoke-on-Trent.
The U16 Boys event also saw three club players
from Lawrence Sheriff making it through to the semi-finals. Tristan
Mobbs battled out four ends with Alex Phillips before running out of
steam with Alex winning the fifth. Ben came through the other semi, also
in five ends against Phil Blowey of Lillington to set up a final with
Alex. The final was a tight affair with long rallies, again going to a
fifth end. Ben started the fifth brightly working himself into an
8-3 lead but then Alex mounted a comeback bringing the match to deuce
before edging ahead to win and go forward to represent the county at
Stoke.
The U11 boys event went to Jesse Kendrick-Hill who
won his group which included the U13 and U16 girls . Another club member,
Annalise Thornhill, won through as the only U13 girl and competed
well on the night to gain some valuable match experience.
Only in the U19 boys and U11 girls were the
club without strong representation.

ESTTA Schools Zone Finals Cheltenham
The U13's won both their matches; an 8-0
against Duston School from Northampton was followed by a 5-3 against
Droitwich Spa High School. Jack Randle and Matthew Outhwaite won all
four of their games with Nic Evangelinos adding three and Jack Davis
two.
The U16's had three matches. They beat
both Northampton School for Boys and Balcarras, Cheltenham 8-0 and drew
4-4 with Wolverley High School, Kidderminster. Tom Bradley won all six
of his games, Tristan Mobbs and Alex Phillips both five with Ben Meakin
four. It was a close call but they went through on a sets count back
having beaten Wolverley 15-14. Thankfully by winning their groups they
avoided the need to travel to Croydon, as runners-up, in the next round!
Thursday 23rd November 2006 Report of Warwickshire Schools Team
Tournament
Once again the U13 and U16 Lawrence Sheriff
school teams were the best in the county. Nineteen teams took part in the
Warwickshire Schools tournament held in the school table tennis centre on
Thursday. At U13 level Jack Randle, Matthew Outhwaite, Greg Clarke and Nic
Evangelinos won in the final against North Leamington.
The U16 Sheriff team were also successful. Ben Meakin, Alex Phillips, Tristan
Mobbs and Tom Bradley won a large group and then overpowered George Elliot 7-1
in the final. Bringing Daniel Fellowes out of retirement couldn’t help the less
experienced U19 Sheriff team who lost out in the final to Stratford. For the
second year running Abbots Farm qualified at U11 level. See the results on the Warwickshire County site
here.

Sunday 19th February
English Schools Regional Finals
Held in Southampton with four club members; Jack Randle, David
McGott, Greg Clarke and Jack Haynes representing
Lawrence Sheriff
School at U13 level:
lost to William Parker 8-0
lost to Peniel Academy (eventual winners) 7-1 (Jack beat their number 1)
beat Court Field 5-3 Jack 2 David 2 Greg 1
Unfortunately Regional Finals day was a half-term Sunday and
clashed with the club table tennis tour of Jersey. This ruled out one of the
better players! Perversely, had the U13 team entered the U19 event, they
may have done even better, as the eventual winners had three players who the
U13's players had beaten in a different competition earlier in the season!!
This shows that the standard of play is improving.
