Rugby 6 Evesham A 4

Rugby 6 Leamington B 4.
Thus was an excellent set of results from Rugby’s Cadets winning all three matches to give themselves a good chance of a top three finish. It was an all-round team effort but the highlights were; Liam Victoros winning all nine of his games, the team winning all three doubles matches (crucial in the close matches), Paul Lilley and Reece Hobson both winning five out of nine. Successes this season

The Club has definitely had is best ever year of results with many teams winning leagues, promotion and cups! The “icing on the cake” was Matthew Outhwaite being selected to play for England Schoolboys. Four club members (Ben Meakin, Jack Randle, Jesse Kendrick-Hill and Matthew Outhwaite) were the Sheriff U16 team who finished as runners up in the National Schools event. Jesse was also a member of the Club’s Cadet team with Ryan Lines and Richard Partridge who were also runners up - in the National Cadet League. Matthew and Jack were also regulars in the Warwickshire County Juniors team.

At a more local level Rugby A are champions with Rugby B runners up in the Daventry League. The A team added their fifth title in seven years. The A team regulars were Dave Daniels (87%), David Kao (88%), Peter Moffatt (41%) and Don Pritchard (53%). Rugby B also had a fairly consistent team of Alan Chan (87%), David Gillibrand (65%) and Jack Koumi (30%) with Marion Dixon playing five matches for an average of 40%. Rugby C were runners up in division two. Steve Patton topped the division averages with 90% with Marion Dixon (71%) and Jo Outhwaite (24%) the other regulars. Junior D - Billy Kyle with Robin and Cameron Eddie beat Barby-Cawston in the Handicap Cup Final. The Juniors put the game beyond Barby-Cawston's reach with a singles and the doubles game still to play.

In the Leamington League the A team held onto their division one place with Adrian Pilgrim finishing the season unbeaten.

Matthew Outhwaite played most of the second half of the season with regulars Ian and Jack Randle. The B team of Tomas Jacko, Ladislav Grezdo and Alan Chan ended runners up to win promotion to the top flight. The E team of Peter Morris, Dave Gillibrand, Tom Orr and Don Pritchard won promotion to the second division. In the two-a-side league Rugby J bounced straight back up to the top division with Hiten Shah, Ming Chuen, Majinder Dosanjh and Baga Singh playing most of the matches between them.

The beginners league has also been very successful thanks to a grant from the borough council. Several schools are still benefitting from regular coaching sessions and the East Warwickshire School Sports Partnership started an inter-schools league for Rugby's schools.

Away from the table the club has also prospered from two grants; one from the Borough Council to start a beginners league and the other from the lottery to run "Girls Only" sessions.

ENGLISH SCHOOLS RUNNERS-UP

The Lawrence Sheriff Under 16 boys’ table tennis team played in the National Finals of the English Schools Table Tennis Competition on Saturday 28th March. It was a massive achievement  to reach the finals, where just the top four schools in the country battle for the title, having come through various rounds and tough competition to reach this final round. The team of Matthew Outhwaite, Jack Randle, Jesse Kendrick-Hill and Ben Meakin were determined to play their best, but knew there would be no easy matches.

Their first match, against Springwell School from Derbyshire, was a hard start to the day with two of the opposing team ranking in the top ten junior players in the UK.  Despite this, the Lawrence Sheriff boys put up a good fight, with Matthew even managing to take a set of their no 1 player.  Jack, Ben and Jesse each won one of their games giving a final score of 3-5 to Springwell.

Next came West London Academy, who would have expected to win comfortably, but the Lawrence Sheriff team were not to be intimidated. They played some amazing table tennis to win 5-3 against all expectations.

Going into the final match, against Calday Grange Grammar School from Merseyside, the boys knew they needed a draw, or better, to have a chance of second place. Their excellent form continued and, despite some thrilling close 5 set matches which could have gone either way, the Lawrence  Sheriff players showed tremendous character and determination to win the match 7-1.This gained them the silver medal position behind Springwell School, the only school to beat them in the entire competition.

This is a fantastic achievement by a very talented team and reflects the hard work that the boys have put into training. Particular thanks go to Rugby Table Tennis Club for their support and coach Adrian Pilgrim who accompanied the team to the finals at Hinckley.

JUNIORS CHRISTMAS CHALLENGE MATCH

HIGHAM LANE JUNIORS 13  RUGBY JUNIORS 14

Organisers Report by Pete Walsh

Match scores throughout the night went 0-4 to 5-5, 5-10 to 10-10, then 11-11, 12-12 and 13-13 before the decider. Last result in was Danny Pendlebury v Daniel Roberts.
Lee Bennett
v Matthew Outhwaite was the closest match at 20-18, 9-11, 11-13. A good game and Matthew making up for a defeat to Lee of two weeks ago in the league. Lee went on to beat Jack Randle in three. Jesse Kendrick-Hill at #3 won all his three matches against the Higham Lane #2, #3 and #4.
Billy Kyle played really well throwing some really good topspins.
Rugby won the top end heavily, the middle order was dominated by Higham Lane and the bottom was pretty even but the two Higham Lane beginners were out of their depth.

Thanks to all for good behaviour and great sportsmanship.

We look forward to a possible rematch next year.

National Cadet League - Final Results

A good day for Rugby A who won division 1. The Rugby B team also did well winning division 3.

Monday 26th February 5-9pm

Warwickshire Schools Individual Championships

Rugby Cadets dominated the U13 Boys event with Saturdays successful Cadet threesome making it through to the semi-finals. Sheriff boys Matthew and Jack met in one semi-final.  They played some of the most competitive table tennis of the night enthralling many of the watching players and parents. The match ended in a narrow win for Jack in the fifth. Jack then battled bravely against Xiaoyang in the final but Xiao played his customary high level to win in straight sets and go through to the National finals in Stoke-on-Trent.

The U16 Boys event also saw three club players from Lawrence Sheriff making it through to the semi-finals. Tristan Mobbs battled out four ends with Alex Phillips before running out of steam with Alex winning the fifth. Ben came through the other semi, also in five ends against Phil Blowey of Lillington to set up a final with Alex. The final was a tight affair with long rallies, again going to a fifth end.  Ben started the fifth brightly working himself into an 8-3 lead but then Alex mounted a comeback bringing the match to deuce before edging ahead to win and go forward to represent the county at Stoke.

The U11 boys event went to Jesse Kendrick-Hill who won his group which included the U13 and U16 girls. Another club member, Annalise Thornhill, won through as the only U13 girl and competed well on the night to gain some valuable match experience.

Only in the U19 boys and U11 girls were the club without strong representation.
