Busy start to 2012

29/01/2012

The first weekend of January was a busy one, with a number of Rugby members playing in Competitions. Most of the top Cadets were taking part in the Warwickshire closed competition at St Nicholas Park in Warwick, the top juniors were in Grantham, competing in the East Midlands Junior 4 star and Adrian Pilgrim was playing in Hereford at the Veterans Western Masters competition.

At the Warwickshire closed there was plenty of success for Rugby. Milly Bradshaw won the Cadet girls’ competition and was runner-up in the Under 13 girls’ event. She then teamed up with her opponent in both of these finals, Olivia Fletcher from Lillington, and was runner-up in the Junior Girls’ doubles.

The cadet boys also had a good day. Both finalists in the Cadet boys’ event were from Rugby, Paul Lilley had beaten Anshul  Satsangi earlier in the day, but Anshul, not disheartened by his earlier loss, played very positively to win the final. Paul also reached the semi-final of the Junior boys’ competition as did Niall Herbert, both having some tough matches along the way. Paul and Anshul played together in the Junior Boys’ doubles and lost in four close sets to finish runners’ up.

In Grantham, Matt Outhwaite reached the quarter-finals of the Junior open competition. He didn’t quite manage to go a stage further, but made George Downing, who went on to lose the final in 5 sets, work hard for his  3-1 win.

Meanwhile, Adrian Pilgrim was flying the Rugby Flag in the opposite direction in Hereford. In the over 40’s mens’ singles he reached the quarter finals before eventually losing in 4 close sets to the number 3 seed, Keith Williams. However, the highlight of the weekend for Adrian came in the men’s doubles. Paired with Darren Griffin for the first time, they hoped their styles of play would complement one another and this certainly proved to be the case, progressing through the rounds until they won the final 3-0 against the number 1 seeds!

Happy New Year!

There have been so many excellent achievements by Rugby Premier Table Tennis Club players during 2011 that it seems worth looking back at some of the highlights that we might have forgotten or you might never have even known about! Our club and the players’ successes certainly put Rugby on the map. It is only when putting a list together like this that you realise just how much players have achieved this year, be it at local league, county, national or international level. Let’s hope that looking back over the year inspires us all to great things in 2012.

Ryan Under-Lines his Class

26/09/2011

Ryan Lines powered his way to victory in the Junior Event in the Burton 1 Star on Saturday 17th September. He easily won his group and moved effortlessly through the quarter and semi finals out-playing his opponents with heavy spin serves and powerful looping and driving on both backhand and forehand wings. In the final he faced Alex Meade who posed a much stiffer test. Although going the full 5 set distance Ryan managed to mix control and power and pulled clear early on in the fifth set when his opponent netted a backspin serve and was unable to block a number of powerful top-spin drives. An excellent result and sweet 'revenge' for the club as Alex had earlier defeated Niall Herbert in the final of the Cadet event.

Winner Ryan Lines and Runner-up Alex Meade
